Training method
« il: Dicembre 30, 2007, 06:13:14 »
I´ve been doing a self made training based on swimming pool ( while the sea is rough here!!) and I don´t notice any improvement...
There´s one thing that bothers me, my static results are way down that I expected but my dynamic is way better...
So I need to improve my static and don´t know how!
Is there anyone that can know how help me improve?

Ciao

There's only a way to improve your static results...You've to hold your breath, but before it you must do some breathing exercises. First of all you've to do pranayama ventilation but you can search it on google...
To improve your results you can try so: if you can stay 2 minutes (for example) whitout breathing, you can improve your times followed this table:
(I made it by myself and it's subjective)
relax:4 min -- apnoea: 1.40
       4 min --             1.50
       4 min --             2.00
       5 min --             2.05
       5 min --             2.10
       5 min --             2.15

(it's just an example but you may structure you table in base of your times)

P.S.
Sorry for my bad english but how you can think i'm italian 8)!
P.P.S.
This is just a summary, but if you want more elucidations you can ask...

Hello Corvina,

like Luki said to you, start with slow practise and done static apnea 2 times per week. The Co2 tables and O2 tables are the most important in static apnea. Soo it is very important to practise this if you want that your static be much better. Find on het everithing about those tables and start with them asap.

If you can't find O2 tables and Co2 just ask and I will give to you trainings...

Hive a nice trainings, Ivan

I introduced myself in another post!
"Hi! I´m new in this site and I want to learn more about apnea! I´m a portuguese spearfisher, competing in the national championship, that is willing to learn so I can improve and perhaps start to compete apnea!
I´m trying to take the instructors course here in Portugal but seems impossible because there´s no interest by the FPAS to open the course! I´m very interested in taking the course lectured by the academy...

Saluti!   "

Hi Corvina,

Most people practicing static hit a wall one day ore another. That can be 4 minutes , 5 minutes 7 minutes or whatever.
Important is to not get frustrated. This will definately bring down your statics or at least prevent any further improvement.
What is important is try and figure out what it is that is blocking you to go any further.
So maybe you could start writing down as much as possible about each training you do and what felt good and what did not. What worked and what did not work. How was your mental state at the beginning, at the end etc.
Lots of my students tend to have the biggest problem with staying relaxed near the end of the static. They tense up all the neck and back muscles , and tension is building and building untill they give up.
Work on staying relaxed even in the difficult faces of the static. That is one big secret to success.
Try and respond to every single tension you notice with a relaxation. Don't treat it as a negative thing but just notice it happening and respond with a complete relaxation. Before you know it your times will increase.
Btw, take of your watch and just have your buddy time you and only tell you after your complete training is finished. Because the only thing you should NEVER think of is time.

Anyway , let us know how you progress and don't hurry . Take your time to slowly increase your statics but with full control and most of all FUN !!!
Never underestimate the power of the fun factor in apnea.

Ciao.

Hi Glenn,

I want to support your words with describing my experience with static apnea in Sharm this year from the opposite perspeciteve - the student one. The main thing I learned is that static apnea when done the way Umberto taught us is a very pleasant activity. On the other side I understood how important it is for mental training.

I focused exactly on trying to be more and more relaxed near the end. After practicing static apnea there only for a couple of days I began to feel more and more pleasant sensations. At the second day I hit 4 minutes which was my PB till then. Every next day I was increasing with ~ half a minute. So on the fourth day I hit 5:30 minutes with very little hard phase, and very long pleasant phase.

And Marco (great guy) told me exactly the same for the watch. After training with him one afternoon I began to look at static apnea in a different way.

Ciao.
